So much has been written about the paleo diet: books, articles, blogs .. But what exactly is this diet?
What is the paleo diet?
The paleo diet is food like our ancestors did thousands of years ago. Actually, it’s not a diet at all – it’s a way of life. The paleo diet is based on the way of life like our ancestors from the ancient stone age (paleolithic age). Effectively it is mainly about banning sugars, dairy and grain and eating only healthy, natural and unprocessed products.
So if you only eat products that our ancestors also ate, you only eat what nature has to offer. Think of fresh and organic products such as eggs, nuts, meat, fish, vegetables and seeds.
What is paleo food and what is not?
Here is an overview of products that fit within the ancestral philosophy. These products are not paleo foods:
Grain. If you follow the paleo diet, you completely stop eating grain. After all, our ancestors did not eat grain. Why is grain unhealthy? Grains are actually not meant to be eaten at all! It contains phytic acid, a harmful substance that the plant makes to protect itself. Another
Dairy. You can also avoid dairy during your paleo diet. It is still unclear whether dairy is very bad. The fatty acids in it can help you burn fat. On the other hand, it also contains bad hormones that you should not consume. My advice for dairy: if you suffer from ailments and vague complaints, it may be that your body is not good at dairy. Then for a while try not to eat dairy at all and see how you feel.
Legumes. Just like grain, you can better keep legumes. These also contain phytic acid. This harmful substance makes it harder to lose weight (or sometimes you don’t even lose weight at all). Personally, I don’t think legumes are a very big problem. Because legumes are not really those big eaters, that you would prefer to eat all day.
Carbohydrates. Do not take too many carbohydrates during your paleo diet. If you consume too many carbohydrates, your body will not have time to burn them. But you don’t have to cut out the carbs completely. Just don’t take too much and make sure these are complex carbohydrates.
What are paleo products?
So no more milk, pizza, bread and yogurt. But what am I allowed to eat? What is paleo?
The paleo diet consists of pure, fresh and organic products. For example, think of:
Good quality meat (including chicken, lamb, beef)
Fish (including mackerel, salmon, herring, eel)
Seeds and pips (chia seeds, pine nuts)
Natural oil (coconut oil, olive oil)
Vegetables (the more the better! Just don’t eat vegetables with a high starch content, such as potatoes)
Why Paleo Recipes?
There are several benefits to this diet. Paleo recipes are generally very easy to make. This is because this form of food mainly consists of unprocessed food. The food whatever you find in nature, say. The ingredients of the recipes below are therefore all available in the normal supermarket.
The paleo lifestyle has also been associated with the following health benefits:
