You are completely convinced, Paleo is a way of living and eating that is made for you.
You prefer to start yesterday. However, there is a challenge… your children. Because where they got a “healthy” league cake to school last week, mom suddenly seems to have lost her mind. How do you make the switch from Friday-Friday day to Paleo?
Start with small steps
I myself am always strongly in favor of “you are doing something right, or you are not doing it”. However, this can be counterproductive in your approach to eating Paleo with your family. Start with small steps if you also want your children to eat Paleo. Banning everything rigorously is one way you don’t want to walk here to be successful (provided your child has a serious allergy).
Start by replacing a meal. If your children like to eat pasta, make a gluten-free version or make zucchini spaghetti yourself (you can do this with a spiral slicer 1). For example, focus on 100% gluten-free before making the next step to Paleo. Take out a less good meal every time and replace it with a better one. If your children are used to dessert, choose fruit. If you do not want to completely ban dairy (there is a lot of discussion about this for children up to 5 years old), choose kefir or full-fat yogurt from grass-fed cows.
Make it negotiable
Children often understand more than we think. If they are old enough (4-5 years), explain why you choose this food. That does not always have to be elaborate at the table … “son, we have to talk …;)”, but can often also be done in between. View labels of packaging together. What ingredients are in it, can you pronounce them? If the latter is not the case, it often means that it contains chemicals that you would rather not have in your body. What do vitamins and minerals do in fruit, for example? Keep it simple and relaxed. By actively involving them, they will make the transition more easily.
Make a hotlist with your family when you’ve eaten Paleo meals for a few weeks. What are the favorites? Hang it on the refrigerator and make a weekly schedule. This way you do not have to think too long about menus and there is more structure (which works well for many children) in the food.
Full-Circle-5 Make sure your child has eaten well before going to a party. He or she will be less likely to eat or eat a lot. And here too, relax if something is eaten that is not Paleo. Strict prohibitions will also backfire here. And sometimes it is even better if your child eats himself at a party. It happened to a friend of mine. She discussed with her son how he felt afterwards. Then he already concluded that “dinosaurs therefore do not eat sweets … :)”.
These are just a few tips on how to deal with Paleo and children. Do you want to read more about this? Let me know. I am also curious who is raising his children Paleo and how you handled this.
