In people who follow a diet, exercising makes them relapse less often. Every 10 minutes of exercise a day reduces the chance of eating too much or unhealthy food by 1 percent. That is the conclusion of American researchers after a study of 130 participants in a weight loss program.
Nutrition and exercise
In the weight loss program, all participants were prescribed a diet of 1,200 to 1,800 kcal per day, depending on their BMI. In addition, they were encouraged to participate in a physical activity program. All participants wore an activity meter to measure the level of physical activity. The researchers followed the participants for six months.
Less relapse after movement
The analysis found that the least exercise people found it more difficult to stick to the diet. For people who were not or hardly physically active, the chance of a relapse was 12 percent. That chance dropped to 5 percent when people performed (light) physical activities for an hour a day. It seemed that the effect is even greater with moderate to vigorous exercise, but there were too few people who exercised intensively during the study period to establish this properly.
Regulating hunger pangs
“Almost all weight loss programs prescribe exercise because of the health benefits and because you burn extra calories with it,” said researcher Rebecca Crochiere of the Center for Weight, Eating and Lifestyle Science in Philadelphia. “Our study shows that exercise also helps maintain a low-calorie diet. This may be due to improved regulation of the feeling of hunger or eating behavior. So that’s another reason to exercise if you want to lose weight. ”
