You achieve a healthy weight with healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle. In the past thirty years, our lifestyle has become less and less healthy. After all, we eat more and exercise less. Still, there are other reasons why we are fatter than a few decades ago.
About thirty years ago we had a healthy weight more often because we were more active, spent more time outside and had more green around us. Today we eat more and spend most of our lives sitting down. We work behind the computer and sit in front of the TV or on Facebook in the evening. However, these are not the only reasons why we are getting fatter. 5 reasons why
Many medicines affect our weight. Antidepressants, in particular, are known to cause obesity. According to experts, about 25 percent of people who take these drugs could gain up to 5 pounds. Because more and more people in the Netherlands take antidepressants, the risk of overweight in our country increases. Other medicines also affect our weight, such as beta blockers, medicines for epilepsy and blood sugar-lowering pills.
Exposure to chemicals
We are exposed to a large amount of substances that contribute to obesity every day. For example, many of our foods contain chemicals associated with a higher Body Mass Index (BMI) and a larger waist circumference. Household products often contain hormone-disrupting substances, such as bisphenol-A (BPA), PCBs, phthalates, triclosan, agricultural pesticides and fire retardants. The sex hormones that cows receive to accelerate their growth also affect our health. In addition, it seems that the antibiotics in meat have the same effect on humans as on animals. Namely: weight gain.
Altered gut environment
It is known that certain gut bacteria determine how heavy we are. Because we eat more meat than a few decades ago, our gut environment has changed. That is not surprising, because many animal products are full of hormones, antibiotics and steroids.
Artificial sweeteners also grip our weight. Artificial sweeteners trick our brains into thinking that our bodies are ingesting sugar. When there is no sugar, our brains signal that they need carbohydrates. The result: binge eating. Just guess what that does to our weight.
Did you know that drinking two glasses of water for your breakfast, lunch, and evening meals – combined with smaller portions – helps you lose weight and maintain weight for at least a year? Did you also know that if you drink 1.5 liters of water a day, you can burn 17,400 extra calories in a year? Did you know that drinking cold water can boost your metabolism? And that a feeling of hunger is often the result of dehydration rather than a need for calories? So there is every reason to drink more water.
Fast food marketing
Have you ever wondered if you really want that ice cream or if your desire was sparked by an attractive ad or commercial? Not only us, but also children are regularly exposed to fast food marketing. Children are even the most important target group. They are seduced not only through commercials on television, but also in schools, through DVDs, games and the internet. In addition, chocolate bars, candy and soft drinks are always at eye level in the supermarket. That fast food marketing has to work is evident from the fact that one in seven children in the Netherlands is overweight these days.
Obesity is perhaps the greatest threat to our health.
